Research groups at CEFAS (UK), GMIT (Ireland), Wageningen Marine Research (Netherlands) and EBLab (France) co-authored an article presenting a new discrete event simulation model to study interactions between a fish community and a mixed fishery fleet.
The spatial structure and dynamic of the community is explicitly described based on commercial catch data, fixed site sampling survey design, and simulations.
The model described in an accompanying R-package called “MixFishSim“ is designed as a tool to explore how a fleet will develop its activity based on the distribution(s) of the resources targeted. It emphasises the importance of identifying the relevant spatio-temporal scale of the population distribution to manage adequately different catches in mixed fisheries.
