Press release: C-Scape

C-Scape, "Migration of large Cetaceans : Role of Pelagic landscapes in the Orientation and behaviors of Individuals."

Release date: 21 Feb 2016

EBLab is pleased to announce our participation in a new research project about whales and the acoustic landscapes they encounter during migration (C-SCAPE). This project is a prolongation of EBLab’s initiative to integrate individual-based modeling and state-of-the-art data collection techniques to develop a quantitative and portable description of ecological interactions both in situ and in vivo.

The two year long project will explore how baleen whales perceive underwater landscapes they cross during migrations and how these landscapes structure in return their behaviour. We will focus on two species distributed in all oceans and which are known to have long migrations: fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Project participants include: J-M Guarini (UMR 8222 LECOB & EBLab), L Chauvaud (UMR 6539 LEMAR), I O'Connor (GMIT), Y. Simard (UQAR), and J Coston-Guarini (UMR 6539 LEMAR & EBLab).

The work is funded by a 2 year grant from INEE (part of the CNRS) as "C-SCAPE : Migration des Grands Cétacés : Rôle des Paysages Pélagiques dans l'Orientation et le Comportement des Individus".
